OSL Looking for Work Study Students!
The Office of Student Life opened September 2008 and runs a variety of programs from professional and leadership development to speakers/seminars, service work, and recruiting/job hunt events. We are looking for students to help plan (i.e., logisitics, marketing, posting advertisements, etc) these events and work these events. There will also be some light data entry of event surveys.The students will also be helping with clerical work in the IEMS department. These projects can be: data entry, mailings, filing, light reception, etc. The student workers will also assist in organizing and scanning application files for the graduate program.Each day will be different depending on the time of year and the students will float between OSL and IEMS. We are more than happy to work with your special skills or interests (i.e., computer programming, graphic design, etc).The pay range is between $8.00 and $8.50 per hour

Eric Schickli, a graduate student in the Master of Science in Engineering Design and Innovation program, and Samantha Katz, a graduate student in the MMM program, won the grand prize of $10,000 at the Diabetes Mine 2009 Design Challenge. 

The Design for America team of Yuri F. Malina, Kushal Amin, Hannah Chung, Can Arican, Katy Mess, Rita Huen, Sourya Roy, Justin Liu, Kevin Li, and Mert Iseri won the "Most Creative" award at the Diabetes Mine 2009 Design Challenge.

Graduate students Carrie Brubaker, PhD candidate in biomedical engineering, Francisco Iacobelli, PhD candidate in computer science, and Nathan Nichols, PhD candidate in electrical engineering and computer science, were each selected to receive the Illinois Technology Foundation's "50 For The Future Award."

Eric Peterman, a senior in industrial engineering and management sciences, signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Bears.

Kelly Quinn, a sophomore in materials science and engineering and member of the NU softball team, was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V second-team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


April 29, 2009

Can Bayram, research assistant and PhD candidate, was awarded the 2009 Laser Technology, Engineering, and Applications Scholarship by The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).

Mallory Hammock, an undergraduate in chemical and biological engineering, received an NSF graduate fellowship. She will attend Stanford in the fall.

Center for Quantum Devices Ph.D. candidate Binh Minh Nguyen, received the 2009 SPIE Scholarship in Optical Science and Engineering.

Keanen Ryan, an undergraduate in chemical and biological engineering, won second prize in the annual AIChE poster competition as part of the local section meeting that is focused on the three Chicago area universities with chemical engineering departments.

The KMC ApneAlert team consisting of students Lauren Hart Smith, Kurt Qing, Alec Zopf, James Yang, and Shonali Midha, has been awarded the NCIIA Advanced E-Team grant for $20,000.

EECS graduate students Francisco Iacobelli and Nate Nichols were named "50 For the Future" 2009 award winners by the Illinois Technology Foundation.


John Sheppard, an undergraduate student in biomedical engineering, has won a Goldwater Fellowship.
